Adam Markowitz - The Flea Chair

"The Flea considers what is redundant in a chair and strips it away, leaving the lightest of sidechairs to support beautiful spaces. Only the elements of the backrest that contact the back remain, meaning that The Flea remains extremely comfortable whilst being slender and trim. Stripped back, The Flea has an elegant subtlety of curve that only reveals itself to an inquiring hand. The strength of The Flea Chair lies in its use of traditional mortise and tenon joinery which gives it incredible strength to stand the test of time.

Tulipwood has one of the strongest strength to weight ratios of any timber, and so is the perfect timber to push this idea of "lightness with strength" to its full potential. A Flea Chair in tulipwood can be lifted with a single finger whilst being strong enough to support the intense stresses which a leaning human body can place upon it. The lighter tones and softly spoken grain of the tulipwood will further help to express the subtle curvature and simple minimalism of The Flea Chair.

My approach to environmentally conscious design is a combination of sustainably sourced material, as well as to design in a way that the piece will offer service at least as long as it took for the timber to grow in the first place. American tulipwood is an incredibly fast growing timber, whilst the traditional construction of The Flea Chair means that this tulipwood chair will last well beyond the time it took to grow the tree that supplied the timber for the chair."
