Cercas Territory was manufactured using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology.The CNC manufacturing process begins with a three-dimensional digital image.

The CNC machine then transforms this image and machines it using a coordinates system which determines the movement of a cutting tool over and through the wood to create a pre-programmed form.

According to the master carpenters in charge of creating this dream, calculating and deciding on the most appropriate manner of dividing the chair model into sections was the most complex part of the manufacturing process. This was essential to programming each piece in the CNC machine computer system. Each piece was glued together to achieve the final shape.

With regard to the timber species chosen by RCR Arquitectes for this project, Félix Larragueta, director at La Navarra, emphasised that “Cercas Territory was manufactured using American cherry, one of the finest woods. It is not only beautiful and top quality, but is extremely easy to machine and work with.”

RCR Arquitectes intended Cercas Territory to be a sensory experience, not only for the eyes, but for the other senses as well, and touch in particular.

With this idea in mind, once the parts of the chair had been glued, the craftsmen at La Navarra conducted a series of manual sanding finishes in order to obtain a set of different textures on the surface of the chair, that would remind us of nature.
