Turkish construction company Arıcan İnşaat has designed a new cultural centre in Gölcük, in the Marmara region of Turkey, set to be completed this summer. The cultural centre will consist of 2 floors across 1100 sqm, and will host a multitude of activities, including vocational training courses, sports activities and large-scale events.

The centre’s façade has been created from thermally-modified American ash. Thermal modification uses heat to remove organic compounds from the wood cells, reducing its ability to absorb water, expand, contract, or provide nourishment for insects or fungi. The high heat produces a naturally durable wood that is permanently resistant to water, insects and decay.  Thermally-modified timber (TMT) is recognisable from the fact that it darkens in colour, having a rich, deep brown appearance and, in this case, it will provide a modern take on a traditional aesthetic to the centre’s façade.

The wood was sourced by Arican after extensive research and provided by Istanbul-based Tantimber. Providing the thermally-modified American ash used in the project, Tantimber CEO Yakup Kayataş said,

The conditions of usage of our products and project details are both very important to us. We are a company that takes into account different processes selectively, namely private residences, collective residences, hotels or public spaces. The Gölcük Summer Cultural Centre project designed by Arıcan İnşaat attracted a lot of attention during the project phase as it is a public area. For this reason, we thought it was correct to propose a wood that would change the face of the city of Gölcük and add an identity to the city. Thus, we have contributed to this beautiful architecture by combining the synergy of sea and green spaces with our natural products. ”
