Zaha Hadid commissioned Gareth Neal to create tableware made from wood. Hadid’s wish was very open-ended, simply specifying ‘tableware’. It was evident from her own work that Hadid would not be looking for something that was ordinary or utilitarian and her team were excited at the potential of ‘applying contemporary techniques to a very traditional material.’ Upon receiving this open brief, Gareth Neal chose to play with the form of a carafe or water carrier and turn it into something more sculptural.
