THE WISH

Amanda Levete commissioned Win Assakul to create a reversible and extendable shallow fruit or cheese bowl.

‘We often have dinners at home for 18 people. Our table is 4.8 m long and I have always wanted a long, shallow bowl to run almost the length of the table. But for smaller dinners of say 6 –12 people, I don't want such a long bowl. By making it extendable we resolve this.’

She loved the idea of having a long serving dish that would allow people to help themselves directly to cheese, cold meats or fruit. Ideally, for this, the dish should be reversible. It also needed to be modular so it could shrink for smaller parties, and she wanted a way of storing the elements so that you could still see what they were. Aesthetically she was influenced by a tradition of very beautiful shallow African bowls, often embellished with rich materials or engraved. The storage box, she said, should be as beautiful as the dish itself.
