"As designers and manufacturers we need to think ahead and analyse the environmental impact of our products. Producing well made products with longevity is no longer enough, we should be looking at other ways we can improve our impact.

The Dome wall hooks are typically made from American walnut or oak, two very common species used in the furniture industry in Australia. As designers we’re guilty of using varieties which are “on-trend” because they are safe to go to market with, however the popularity of these household varieties means other fantastic species go under-utilised. Using tulipwood in this project demonstrated the versatility and workability of this particular material, as well as encouraged the use of other potential species. 

In addition to ‘replacing’ the material, I wanted to explore other ways we could minimise the impact of this product during manufacturing. By looking at how the waste from the wall hooks could be utilised as a by-product we managed to create a new product."
