Anaca Studio - EMI Pod

"In a world where throwaway culture has become predominant, it is of utmost importance to have an environmental approach to design and manufacturing. It is a lifestyle choice that extends from my personal life and attitude to waste, into my business and my work. It is our role as designers to educate the public about better design and sustainability, and emphasise why it is critical to our economy, to our planet and to people in general. Using sustainable timbers in furniture is the least we can do.

During the Seed to Seat project with AHEC in 2016, we recorded that the timber used in making our Emi pods took 0.12sec to regrow in the U.S. hardwood forest.  It has such a negligible impact on the planet and at the same time it will also outlive us. So it was an easy decision to select the Emi for this project.

I was curious to see how the colour variations of the tulipwood would play with the Emi’s look. The timber has reinforced the scalloped detailing and made the aesthetic much bolder. I love seeing how a material can affect a finished product. I also wanted to do a stained version to see if the grain or the strong variations in the raw material would show through. It’s always great seeing the two pods together in both finishes, they pair up so beautifully."
