“Thank you for inviting Morphogenesis to participate in this initiative. We are looking forward to this opportunity not only for the creative input from Morphogenesis but also for the vision with which the practice was set up 25 years ago, which was to put contemporary Indian design onto a global platform. We believe that AHEC and THINK! Design will serve as a catalyst in helping us showcase our work to a global audience. We look forward to working with American hardwoods and experience how the materiality of it will contribute towards creating a bespoke product.” - Sonali Rastogi, Founding Partner, Morphogenesis

Could you tell us a little bit about the design thought and inspiration behind your piece?

The design thought and inspiration behind the piece were primarily focused on addressing the shift in communication caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. With physical distancing measures in place, the design aimed to create an opportunity for people to reconnect with their friends and close mates in a safe and socially distanced manner.

The swing design was chosen as it provides a comfortable seating arrangement that allows individuals to relax and engage in conversation while maintaining the necessary distance. Additionally, the design of the swing incorporates aesthetic elements, turning it into a visually appealing piece of art when not in use.

Why did you select American hard maple and cherry for your design?

Different wood species have unique characteristics, including variations in color, grain patterns, and hardness, which can contribute to the overall design and visual impact of the swing. In this project, the selection of materials was based on factors such as durability, strength, and aesthetic appeal.

What have you learned through being a part of this project?

Being involved in this project has provided us with valuable insights and lessons, including:

Importance of creative design: The project highlights the value of creative design in solving real-world problems. By developing a unique swing design, it became possible to provide people with an opportunity to reconnect and communicate during a time of physical distancing.

Balancing aesthetics and functionality: The design of the swing aimed to be both visually appealing and practical. This balance between aesthetics and functionality is an important consideration in any design project.

Understanding human needs: By creating a space for relaxation and conversation, the project recognized the importance of human connection and the need for social interaction. It demonstrated the value of addressing these needs through design interventions.
