The Invisible Store of Happiness is a unique experiment between an artist and a furniture maker to challenge the versatility and properties of two quality American hardwoods: maple and cherry. Designer/maker Sebastian Cox and sculptor Laura Ellen Bacon were to create an installation at the Order of St John for Clerkenwell Design week 2015, using traditional furniture making techniques such as dry jointing and steam bending in combination with thin twisted strips of American hardwood to create a textural construction. The resulting structure set out to show how craftsmanship and creativity can push these materials to their limits, while simultaneously exploring their significant environmental contribution to sustainable design.
