VISION

In 2008, as part of the London Design Festival’s Size + Matter project, David Adjaye was invited to push the boundaries of a material of his choice. In collaboration with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), Adjaye created Sclera using American tulipwood

The exhibition brief was to challenge the perception of everyday materials, by creating innovative temporary outdoor structures.

Adjaye interpreted the meaning of the Sclera pavilion as a “space of my point of view” and standing within sight of the London Eye, the shape was inspired by the human eye. The structure blurs the boundaries between architecture, design, engineering and sculpture.
