"We take a very material driven approach to designing our furniture. The selected materials often become the products' driving aesthetic. With this in mind the timber selected needs to embody all the core values of the brand and its place in the market. For the Hoshi collection this was achieved through a very honest approach to solid timber – a minimal frame with no visible fixings cradles a dominant upholstered form. The materiality is at the fore in this collection – American tulipwood naturally has a lot of character and it has been interesting to see how this has in turn changed the chair's character.
The timber can have huge variation in figure and colour. I'm very interested to explore how American tulipwood handles different staining applications - the grain structure and colouration could lend itself to multiple finishes."
