Renowned designer and architect Ammar Kalo has launched his latest creation, the Lillyframe bench, at the prestigious Dubai Design Week 2023. Lillyframe stands out as a masterpiece, crafted from a single plank of wood, precision-carved with a CNC machine. Designed for effortless disassembly and convenient flat-packing, this bench embodies the perfect balance of durability and weightlessness. Its clean rounded shapes and ribbed underside, inspired by pond lily pads, evoke a sense of organic beauty, setting it apart from conventional designs.

Ammar Kalo shares his inspiration, stating, "I envisioned a lightweight bench that seamlessly integrates into various spaces around the home. Lillyframe is not only easily assembled and disassembled for flatpacking but also serves as a versatile piece—from an entryway bench to a casual seat in the living room or bedroom, and even as a stylish side table."

Craftsmanship and Joinery

The joinery of Lillyframe reflects simplicity with a touch of elegance. Employing a basic mortise and tenon joint, reinforced by a slim beam held in place with a wedge, the bench showcases meticulous craftsmanship. All joints were machined using a CNC machine and meticulously hand-adjusted for precision.

Sustainability at the Core

Ammar Kalo's commitment to sustainability shines through in Lillyframe's construction. Crafted entirely from sustainably-sourced American hardwood and finished with natural linseed oil, the bench ensures a minimal environmental footprint. Kalo explains, "The choice of ash, with its bold grain pattern, not only aligns with the intended stained finish but also contributes to the durability of the furniture."

Furthermore, Kalo emphasizes sustainability in the manufacturing process, stating, "Most wood chips from the production will be repurposed in other designs, contributing to a circular and eco-conscious approach."

Lillyframe's aesthetic appeal is heightened by a meticulous sanding process using 300 grit sandpaper and a finish with colored linseed oil. This technique not only enhances the natural grain of the wood, especially on ash but also adds a playful contrast to the piece.
