Tom took inspiration from the work of Richard Deacon and decided to break down his share of the red oak into smaller strips and use these to create a free form basket or container. He then experimented with thin strips of wood and attempted to weave these together, eventually incorporating coloured dye in to the design as well, which then became the basis for the design of his shoe rack.
"I enjoyed putting my preconceptions or prejudices about the colours of the wood to one side and instead embracing them. This made me more curious and adventurous in terms of design – and I would now consider using red oak again and perhaps explore other hardwoods."
