What I have always wanted is...The Wish List
An intriguing title, for an extraordinary project, for this year’s London Design Festival (LDF). We (AHEC) are collaborating with Sir Terence Conran and Benchmark Furniture to create a unique collection, all produced in American hardwoods. Sir Terence has invited a stellar list of designers and architects, to commission the piece for their home they have always wanted but never been able to find. Each commissioner, has been assigned a talented emerging designer, who will develop the design with them and then take part in a “making week” at Benchmark Furniture at the beginning of July.
There is an unbelievable line up led by Terence Conran, which includes some amazing architects; Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, Amanda Levete, Alison Brooks, Zaha Hadid, Alex de Rijke and John Pawson. Not forgetting artist Allen Jones and fashion designer Paul Smith.
What is so exciting about this project is that the brief is very open and early ideas reflect this; a shed, a ladder, a stool, a chaise lounge, a table, a pencil sharpener, and a fruit bowl. I shall leave you to guess who wants what at this stage! Also don’t be fooled by a seemingly mundane list of household objects because I can assure you its no ordinary chaise lounge and the fruit bowl will extend to 3 metres!
This will be a great show-case for the versatility of American hardwoods, because I can’t think of any other material that could be used to create such an eclectic mix of products and render each one beautiful and unique. Follow all the news on twitter, our website and in the design media. Then come and see the results during LDF (13-21 September) in an exhibition at the V&A museum. I know I have got “what I have always wanted…..” already - and that’s to do a project with the design legend Terence Conran and a few of his friends!
