Woods winning ways

By: David Venables in Events, Architecture and Design

What do the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, the Forestry Commission and the American Hardwood Export Council all have in common? The answer is a commitment to promoting excellence in wood craftsmanship and design through their support of the UK Wood Awards. These annual awards have gained widespread recognition within the architectural and design community with past winners including Foster & Partners, Dixon Jones, Cullinan Architects, Alison Brooks, Simon Conder and Hopkins architects. The judges met recently to shortlist this year’s entries and once again there is a very high standard and many challenging and exciting designs. Wood has come out of the closet in recent years and is now championed as a first choice material by many designers chiefly because it’s exciting to work with, great to look at, and has environmental credentials second to none.
