THE WISHBONE ROCKING CHAIR. FROM THE WOOD AWARDS 2010

Furniture designer Toby Howes’ original career as an ecologist informs his approach to design and materials.

“I spent 13 years working with various organisations studying ways to reduce the impact that man has on our environment. This influences my choice of materials and the way I approach design, using clean elegant lines to create practical function.”

His Wishbone Rocking Chair is all about simple lines, with the curves mirroring each other to create an unusual silhouette for a rocking chair.  Made in American maple, with American black walnut highlighting the grace of the supporting curves, the chair has short rockers so that it does not take up as much floor space as more traditional designs.  Practical and comfortable, the design has found particular favour with nursing mothers.
